Newcastle United fans have launched an attempt to buy out owner Mike Ashley, who has already stated he’d be willing to part with the club for approximately £80 million. Resentment against Ashley has been brewing since the beginning of his ownership and took a serious turn with Kevin Keegan’s 2008 dismissal, but reached a boiling point with the recent renaming of St James’ Park to reflect Ashley’s sportswear business endeavors: sportsdirect.com@St James’ Park Stadium.
Now fans are actively seeking financial support from each other, banks, and businesses through the non-profit Newcastle United Supporters Trust. Their system of collecting money from fellow fans ultimately will include placing the money in escrow with lawyers to demonstrate to the Newcastle powers that be that the bid is serious.
