Traumatized by a terrorist attack early this year against the Togolese national team, Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor has publicly announced his retirement from international football.

The announcement brings an end to the 26 year old’s nine year international career, including a stint as captain for his country. But the attempt on his and his teammates’ lives was more than he could justify risking again.

“I am still haunted by the events I witnessed on that horrible afternoon,” Adebayor said. “It is a moment I will never forget and one I never want to experience again.”
