Ireland met defeat, and the end of their World Cup dreams, at the hands of Thierry Henry – quite literally. Henry’s controversial set-up to Gallas’s equalizing goal, which saw France advance on aggregate, has been confirmed by those involved to be a handball allowed by the officials.

Henry told BBC Radio Five Live, “It was a handball, but I’m not the ref. The ball hit my arm, fell in front of me and I played it. The ref allowed it. That’s a question you should ask him.”

In the midst of what Ireland coach Giovanni Trapattoni called a “bitter situation”, said question is being asked loudly and much both by many on Ireland’s side and by neutral parties.
