Bulgarian referee Anton Genov marked November 14th’s friendly between Macedonia and Canada with a few not-so-friendly decisions. Four of them, in fact – this friendly match saw a highly unusual total of 4 penalties awarded. The penalties were evenly split between the two teams, but all came in the second half of the match, which Macedonia won 3-0.
The Bulgarian Football Union and Bulgarian clubs have complained about the poor standards and rise in mistakes in Bulgarian officiating. But it’s not the potential of mistakes that caused UEFA to suspend Genov from officiating international matches. It’s irregular betting patterns, which UEFA are now investigating, placing Genov in limbo until it’s clear whether or not his motives were pure.
