The once-great and since defunct New York Cosmos, formerly led by legendary player Pele, are staging a return to the US domestic scene – specifically Major League Soccer (MLS). After ownership woes, the Cosmos disbanded in the 1980s.
On Sunday the team announced their plans to join the MLS with Pele present to support the bid. Their plan is to begin by fielding youth teams via the Cosmos Academy in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy to achieve a two-pronged goal of impacting MLS with Cosmos talent and attracting fans in the New York area, which is already serviced by the New York Red Bulls.
Joe Fraga, executive director of the Cosmos, said “Our plan has several phases, but if you fast-forward, it’s our aspiration to play at the highest level in this country, and that’s MLS. [...] We want to make it relevant again; we want kids to know what the Cosmos were and are, to bring the soccer dream back to the city.”
Pele echoed the notion, “We are working very hard to bring the beautiful game back to New York, and now we finally have people who support us.” [via OddsPreview]
