Liverpool will make a £4million bid to bring Wigan striker Emile Heskey back to Anfield, according to The Sun.
Reds manager Rafa Benitez is desperate for cover in attack because of Fernando Torres’ hamstring problems.
Heskey, who spent four years at Liverpool before leaving in 2004, is out of contract in the summer and the Latics could cash in now.
Wigan boss Steve Bruce insisted he will not let Heskey, 30, leave on a cut-price deal. But he knows the cash could make Amr Zaki’s loan move from El Zamalek permanent.
Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has revealed the club has yet to receive any offers for Emile Heskey.
“Everybody knows Emile Heskey’s future hangs in the balance right now ahead of the transfer window reopening,” he told the Manchester Evening News.
“Emile is out of contract at the end of the season, but I can confirm there have been no approaches or offers for him.”
Meanwhile, Whelan has reiterated his stance that the Latics will not stand in Heskey’s way should he decide to move on when his contract expires.
He added: “If Emile eventually moves on from Wigan, we naturally have to find a quality replacement. We totally respect Emile and it all depends on what he wants to do.
“I honestly feel this could be his last career move but, obviously, we would love him to stay at Wigan.
“He is a very important player for us and a fine ambassador for the club and his country.”
