The referee who allowed the now-infamous “beach ball goal” to stand last week has been assigned a second tier game this weekend. Mike Jones, EPL referee, was widely criticized for his decision to allow a goal that was struck by Darren Bent, but deflected off a beach ball thrown onto the pitch by a Liverpool fan. The early goal saw Sunderland win 1-0 over Liverpool. Rules dictate that the goal should have been disallowed.
