Out-of-favour Middlesbrough midfielder Mohamed Shawky claims to have caught the eye of Newcastle United, according to the Daily Mail.
The Egypt international has barely got a look-in this term despite Boro struggling so badly, so it is difficult to envisage him seeing out his current contract which expires in just over 12 months time.
According to the 27-year-old himself, Newcastle are strongly considering whether to rescue him from nightmare at the Riverside.
Shawky told Al-Hayat TV: “A Newcastle representative was present in Cairo to watch me in action during Egypt’s World Cup qualifier with Zambia,
“Joining Newcastle would be a step forward. They are a very good team and have a large fan-base in England.”
Shawky originally joined Middlesbrough on a £650,000 deal from Al-Ahly in the summer of 2007.
