Fernando Torres wants to join a club in Italy when his time with Liverpool ends, although the striker says he intends to stay at Anfield for “a long time” before seeking a fresh challenge in Serie A. Torres believes that a move there would be a step towards completing his CV after his spells in La Liga, with Atlético Madrid, and the Premier League, widely accepted to be Europe’s other two big leagues.
Asked where he saw his future after Liverpool, he said: “I’d like to play in Italy, to try Serie A, to complete my CV and play in all of Europe’s big leagues – Spain, Italy, England – and Germany would be good too. Bayern [Munich] is a very attractive club, although playing there would be a long way in the future. Football changes a lot and, although I’m not going anywhere, it would be nice to play in Germany and Italy before going back to Spain, to Atlético of course.”
Torres confirmed, in an interview with the Spanish magazine Don Balon, that he would not be leaving Anfield any time soon, comparing the treatment he gets from the supporters to that afforded to the local players.
“I want to stay here for a long time, many seasons, because I like it in Liverpool,” he said. “I have four years on my contract after this one, the club has treated me brilliantly and I owe the fans so much because they make me feel like I am going to stay here for the rest of my life.
“They treat me like [Steven] Gerrard or [Jamie] Carragher, and that’s really amazing. I want to repay that affection by winning the title because it’s been a long time since they won it. I don’t have a release clause in my contract – transfers happen when two clubs agree a fee.”
The 25-year-old ruled out a move to Real Madrid, great rivals of his boyhood team, Atlético. “They’re not bigger than anyone else, the same as Barça, Milan, Bayern, Inter. Just another big team. I don’t pay them any attention, the opposite, because of my Atlético past. I’ll say yes to my girlfriend at the altar, but not to [Madrid's presidential candidate] Florentino Pérez because I don’t see myself at Real.”
