Aston Villa are set to sign Ajax’s £9 million-rated Belgium defender Thomas Vermaelen, reports the Daily Mail.
Vermaelen, 24, was watched on international duty for Belgium by a Villa delegation last week.
Vermaelen is tipped by ex- Manchester United star Jaap Stam to become a top class Premier League performer.
“I liked the way he was defending as a youngster,” said Stam. “I think he was only 19 when he had made his debut.
“But he was a quick learner and strong in tackles.”
