Following their shocking 9-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur this weekend, the players of Wigan Athletic have banded together to refund ticket prices to all fans who witnessed the shambolic display in person.
A message from the players on the club’s homepage reads, “We feel that as a group of players we badly let down our supporters yesterday (Sunday), and this is a gesture we have to make and pay them back for their tremendous loyalty.”
Wigan knows all too well what a painful embarrassment Sunday’s defeat was, and none more than manager Roberto Martinez. Of his team’s performance he said, “It was unacceptable and unexpected. The way we defended in key moments was not good enough. I am embarrassed as it’s a result we don’t want to be associated with. We need to move on quickly and give a good reaction in the next game.”
